Former education minister H G Govinde Gowda passes away

Chikkamagaluru: Former education minister and well-known Gandhian H G Govinde Gowda passed away here at his residence in Koppa of Chikkamagaluru district on Wednesday, January 6.

He was suffering from age related health problems from the last few months, it is said. He was 90.

Govinde Gowda was a well-known Gandhian, who entered politics in the Independent India. He was initially the president of Koppa Muncipal Council in 1952. In 1983, he was elected to LS from Sringeri constituency for the first time. Then he served as the Minister for State for Primary education and Adult Education between 1983 and 1986. He also served in the Devegowda cabinet as education minister.

He is remembered for his scheme of introducing a common entrance test to recruit teachers. During his tenure, more than 90,000 teachers were appointed.

He is survived by a wife and six children.

The last rites of the veteran will be performed in Koppa today, January 7.
