Chikkamagluru: It is more than a year since SC asked government to decide the title claims over the disputed cave shrine, Guru Dattatreya Bababudan Swami Dargah, atop Bababudangiri in Chikkamagaluru district after considering versions of all political parties involved.

In that order the court allowed the descendant of the Sufi peer to appoint Mujavar (priest) to perform rituals in the shrine.

The shrine has a long history of litigation since 1978 where the property of the dargah was taken over by the wakf board. Sufi peer challenged the move and got a decree in its favour. Later, the government attempted to take it over but the Apex Court on Sept 3, 2015 ordered authorities to maintain status quo advising the State government to take an informed decision.

The state government has not done anything with the order nor is inclined to swim in troubled waters which might again lead to communal unrest. But the Hindu and Muslim community leaders are fighting for their share. The Hindu leaders want the shrine to be declared as Hindu place of worship and expect the state government to appoint a priest. At the same time they want the skeletal remains in the dargah to be shifted to nearby Nagenahalli. On the other side Muslim community leaders are fighting for their cause providing evidence substantiating their claims over Bababudanagiri and wants the state government to hand it over to them. All political parties aware of the fluid situation do not like to rake up the issue with assembly elections round the corner busy pleasing their respective vote banks.

State government which promptly follows SC verdict of Cauvery fearing contempt of court has not bothered to find an amicable solution to the long pending dispute despite SC orders, allege locals.

Probably the state government has taken a leaf out even before SC passed an order on Cauvery dispute where it said “LIVE and LET LIVE” and firmly sticking to that concept thereby maintain ‘status quo’.
