Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala High Court has upheld the decision of a Thiruvananthapuram school who expelled a class 11 student for hugging his female friend, another class 11 student.

On July 21 this year, the boy hugged hugged his female friend after her performance in a competition. He also uploaded their photos on social media, which the school authorities considered inappropriate. They claimed that this behaviour was in violation of the school’s disciplinary code.

The parents of the boy approached the High Court to challenge the school’s expulsion of their son. They had earlier approached the Child Rights Commission when they felt that they would be facing a biased panel at the enquiry commission as the key personnel were the school authorities. The Child Rights Commission, on October 4, gave them an interim order which suggested that the student should be allowed to attend classes so that his education was not hampered.

The Kerala High Court has upheld this decision of the school stating that the Principal of the school has the responsibility to maintain discipline and “morality” within the school premises. They also stated that the Child Rights Commission could not interfere in this matter.
