New Delhi: Soon after a plot to assassinate the Prime Minister was brought out in the open, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief Sharad Pawar alleged that the supposed assassination plot was a mere ploy to garner sympathy for the Prime Minister.

While addressing a gathering in Pune, Pawar said that he spoke to a retired police officer, who had previously worked with the CID, about the assassination plot. “They said that there was a threatening letter but, there was no substance to it. The letter is being used to garner sympathy from the people,” Pawar stated. The former officer also told Pawar that when such letters do emerge, they are not given to the media instead they are given to security agencies for taking adequate security measures.

“The BJP realised that they are losing popularity so now they are playing the threat letter card,” he opined.

Irked by Pawar’s insinuation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis slammed the NCP chief in a tweet reading: “It is very unfortunate that Sharad Pawar ji is raising doubts about the communication ceased by the police which revels the plot to assassin Hon PM Narendra Modi ji. Hon PM Narendra Modi ji is the leader of our nation and not just of a political party. (sic)”

He further tweeted: “Hon PM @narendramodi ji is the leader of our nation and not just of a political party. @PawarSpeaks is not expected to stoop down to this level.
Police has all the evidences and truth will prevail. (sic)”

The plot came to light on Friday, when police told a Pune court that a plan to assassinate PM Modi was revealed with the seizure of a letter addressed to a Maoist leader named Prakash and signed ‘R’. The letter is dated April 18, 2017. The rationale for the alleged assassination plot in the letter is to ‘end Modi-raj’ because of the electoral victories of the BJP and its allies in Assembly elections. The letter discussed ways of assassinating the PM with a “Rajiv Gandhi-type incident”.

The letter was recovered from the house of Rona Wilson, one of the five arrested in connection with the ‘Elgar Parishad’ held in Pune in the month of December and the Bhima-Koregaon violence that followed. The letter sent cold shivers down the polito-sphere’s spine but, has also given rise to suspicion about its authenticity. JNU students’ union vice-president Shehla Rashid, in a sarcastic tweet on Saturday, accused Union Minister Nitin Gadkari and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS) of hatching a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi while trying to shift blame onto “Muslims/Communists”.

Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam is another member of the opposition to cry foul, stating that this was an “old tactic” used by the PM. “I’m not saying this is entirely false but, it’s a tactic PM Modi has been using since he was CM,” Nirupam told ANI, adding that news of his assassination is “planted” whenever the PM’s popularity dips.
