Nadia nun rape case: West Bengal CID arrests first accused

Mumbai: In the first breakthrough in the nun rape case in Nadia in West Bengal, the first accused has been arrested. The West Bengal Police CID arrested the accused Salim from Mumbai.

The 70-year-old nun was raped by a gang of seven dacoits inside a Convent in Gangnapur village of Nadia district in West Bengal on March 14, 2015. Reportedly, the victim along with another nun tried to thwart the robbery attempt on the premises of the Convent.

However, the dacoits tied up the other nun and raped the victim in front of her. They also fled with Rs 10 to 12 lakh in cash.

The elderly nun was admitted to a hospital in Ranaghat and was discharged the morning of on March 20. Ranaghat sub-divisional hospital superintendent AN Mondol said the Sister Superior of Convent of Jesus and Mary, who had been declared fit for discharge, was released from hospital at around 2:45 AM on March 20.
CID teams have taken photographs and making sketches of the convent building. The West Bengal government had on March 18 decided to hand over the case to the CBI as the demand for justice grew louder with the culprits still at large. But the investigating agency is yet to formally take charge of the case.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has also taken suo motu cognisance of the case and has issued a notice to the West Bengal government. Meanwhile, posters in support of the nun have been put up outside the convent where the rape took place.
