Independent India’s first IAS officer Anna Rajam Malhotra no more

Mumbai: Independent India’s first IAS officer Anna Rajam Malhotra passed away at the age of 91, on Tuesday, at her residence located in Andheri Suburban.

She was born in Ernakulam district of Kerala in the year 1921. She completed her schooling in Kozhikode and graduated from the Madras University in Chennai. In 1951 she joined Indian Civil Service in the Madras cadre.

She worked in the Madras Government under the regime of the then Chief Minister CR Rajagopalachari. She had an experience of working under seven chief ministers of Tamilnadu.

She was married to R N Malhotra, who was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India from 1985-90.

Anna Rajam Malhotra was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan in the year 1989.
