Hyderabad: The Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad has recorded the highest rainfall in the month of December in 100 years. The city witnessed over 46.6 mm of rainfall on Thursday evening.
IMD Hyderabad scientist, M D Naga Ratna stated that on Thursday, the city received the highest rainfall in a hundred years, and was more than the previously recorded highest rainfall which was about 44.5 mm on December 1, 1918.
The heavy rainfall caused massive traffic disruptions at several places, as well as power failure in many parts of the state.
According to IMD reports, Nampally, Himayatnagar, Asifnagar and Shaikpet were the areas that received heavy rainfall. Hakimpet recorded the highest rainfall in the state with about 88.0 mm of rainfall, while the lowest rainfall (0.4mm) was recorded in the Mancherial district in Telangana.
Light to moderate showers have been projected for the next two days due to the upper air cyclonic circulation over the northern interior of Karnataka, said Raja Rao, IMD scientist.
In the meanwhile, the tentatively named Cyclone Phetai is currently taking shape over the Bay of Bengal and will be complete in the next 24 hours. Projections have shown that it will cross the Andhra Pradesh coast between Ongole and Kakinada on December 17.
