Thiruvananthapuram: The family and relatives of Kanaka Durga have disowned her and refused to take her in for entering the Lord Ayyappa’s Sabarimala temple sanctum.
Durga is one of the first women of menstruating age who entered Sabarimala shrine in Kerala following the verdict by the Supreme Court. She has now become homeless and has been taken to a government shelter home, One Stop Centre, run by the Social Justice Department, at Perinthalmanna.
Durga’s mother-in-law allegedly thrashed her on January 15 for which she had been undergoing treatment at Calicut Medical College.
According to News18.com, after she was discharged from the hospital, both her husband and brother said that she would not be allowed to enter their houses, forcing her to seek refuge at the government shelter.
Speaking to the news portal, Kanaka Durga blamed her husband for not letting her enter her in-laws’ house. “Now I am waiting for a court order. Till then the police have housed me in a government shelter, One Stop Centre, run by the Social Justice Department,” the 44-year-old woman had said.
According to reports, Durga had approached the Perinthalmanna police on Tuesday, January 22, who then took her to the government shelter. She had suffered injuries on her head and ear after allegedly getting beaten up by her mother-in-law. Meanwhile, her brother has announced that she won’t be allowed in his house till she apologises to the Hindu community and Ayyappa devotees.
Kanaka Durga, along with Bindu, had offered prayers at the Ayyappa shrine on January 2, thus becoming the first women to enter the temple. Reportedly Durga’s family was unaware of her decision to enter the shrine.
