New Delhi: The Centre has announced plans to extend social security coverage to gig and platform workers by integrating them into the eShram Portal. This initiative aims to provide these workers with access to various social security schemes.

Government Commitment
In a review meeting, Mansukh Mandaviya, Minister for Labour and Employment, highlighted the government’s commitment to the welfare of gig and platform workers. These workers play a vital role in the economy, and the government is taking proactive steps to ensure they benefit from social security measures.

eShram Portal Integration
The eShram Portal, which serves as a centralised database for unorganised workers, will be used to register gig and platform workers. This move is expected to streamline the process of providing social security benefits to this segment of the workforce.

Mandaviya emphasised that companies employing gig and platform workers would be required to take the lead in facilitating the registration process. An online window will be made available for aggregators to ensure a smooth and efficient registration process.

Significance of the Code on Social Security
The Minister also underscored the importance of the Code on Social Security, which is a landmark legislation that defines gig and platform workers for the first time in India. This legislation is a crucial step towards recognising and formalising the roles of these workers within the economic framework.

Developing a Robust Framework
The Ministry of Labour and Employment is collaborating with stakeholders to develop a comprehensive framework that addresses the needs of gig and platform workers. This framework will be aligned with the evolving nature of work and aims to provide adequate protection and benefits.
