New Delhi: The Samajwadi Party (SP) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) on Saturday, January 12, announced their alliance for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections 2019, which came as a blow to the Congress party.
However, Congress expressed hope that the two Uttar Pradesh parties would go in for a rethink as polls approach.
Speaking to reporters, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram said, “Perhaps this isn’t the last word. Maybe there will be some rethink as the elections approach. A truly broad-based alliance will be formed in Uttar Pradesh. If necessary, the Congress party will contest elections on its own strength.”
Meanwhile, in view of the crucial development ahead of the general elections, AICC In-charge Ghulam Nabi Azad, UPCC President Raj Babbar and other senior Congress leaders will hold talks in Lucknow tomorrow to chalk out the future strategy.
BSP Supremo Mayawati and SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said that the Congress has been kept out of the alliance but added that they would not contest the elections in the Congress strongholds Amethi and Rae Bareli.
