New Delhi: WhatsApp has been instrumental in connecting people across various countries. Unfortunately, like any technology, this app has also been used by people for nefarious purposes.

A bunch of 119 members from over 10 countries that was part of a WhatsApp group being used for child pornography, was busted by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

Reportedly, the WhatsApp group named “Kids XXX”, that was created nearly two years ago, had members from the United States of America, China, New Zealand, Mexico, Brazil, Afghanistan. Pakistan, Kenya, Nigeria, Sri Lanka and India.

The members have been booked under the Information Technology Act, 2000 section 67 B, for sharing pornographic videos and photographs of children. As this is a global crime, CBI sources said that the details of the foreign nationals involved will be disclosed with the respective countries and added that the five of the group’s admins from India are being investigated.

Nikhil Verma, a 20-year-old graduate, was arrested on February 22 and has been taken to Delhi for interrogation. Their houses in Mumbai, Delhi and Noida and Kannauj in Uttar Pradesh are being searched, added the source.

So far the agency has seized tablets, laptops and mobile phones containing evidence from their properties.

It is still unclear at this point, if the videos and photos were shot by the members themselves or if the obscene content was merely being shared.

The source of the content as well as the identities of the victims are currently being probed.
