Call money racket: Govt to try accused under Nirbhaya Act

Hyderabad: With regard to cases where money lending is connected to sexual harassment of women borrowers, the state government has firmly resolved to apply the amended Sections of the IPC, Nirbhaya Act.

The government is all set to establish a special court in Vijayawada with a Public Prosecutor to try Nirbhaya cases according to reports.This is in addition to efforts under way to introduce a very stringent Act to regulate money lending business, according to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu.

In a statement made in the Legislative Assembly on the call money racket, the Chief Minister said that government would be acting tough on such money lenders. He also said that the enactment of a law to regulate money business in the State is being considered in the current session.

Meanwhile, police have registered as many as 227 cases across the State so far, including five cases that involved sexual harassment and charging of exorbitant interest rates. In all, 188 accused have been arrested, and they include sympathisers of the YSRC (65), TDP (20), Congress (12), BJP (4), CPI (6) and CPI (M) (1), while cases have been registered against 78 others.

“The government has already ordered a judicial probe into the issue, and anyone with complaints can approach the judicial commission, apart from seeking police help. No one will be spared. This is our firm assurance and commitment to people,” Naidu asserted.
Leader of the Opposition Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, quoting rules, said the statement issued by the Chief |Minister could end up in allowing a couple of clarifications sought by the members.

He alleged that the government had adopted a lenient approach towards the accused that included an MLA and MLC of the ruling party.
