New Delhi: A week after a 22-year-old girl was attacked by her brothers with acid in Uttar Pradesh’s Greater Noida, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday, May 15, asked Uttar Pradesh DGP O.P. Singh to enforce a ban on the sale of acid.

Citing media reports over the attack on the 22-year-old girl, the Commission in a letter to the Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police said, “The NCW has come across a media report in various national dailies wherein it has been reported that a woman was allegedly attacked with acid by her two brothers who later dumped her in Kot village in Greater Noida.”

Sharma in her letter said the Commission was disturbed by the rise in acid attacks in Uttar Pradesh.

“Considering the gravity of the matter, it is requested that action be taken to enforce the ban on sale of acid in the state and a detailed action taken report in the matter be sent to the Commission at an early date,” the NCW chairperson said.

The 22-year-old woman, who was attacked on May 9 lost her sight after an acid attack on her in Greater Noida for which she blamed her two brothers.

The woman named her brothers as the attackers and said they had tried to kill her earlier, too.
