1407 people under house quarantine in wake of Nipah outbreak

Kozhikode: The Nipah virus, which has led to the death of 17 people in Kerala, has resulted in 1407 people being quarantined in their own homes. This is mainly in the Kozhikode and Malappuram districts.

Kozhikode District Medical Officer, Dr Jayasree said that out of the 18 confirmed cases of the virus, 16 are dead and two are under treatment. There are 11 suspected cases and 1407 are in the contact list, she added.

Some of the medical staff from the Balussery Taluk hospital in Kozhikode district, who had been in contact with Nipah virus victims, are also among those who have been placed under house quarantine.

The state government has instructed those under house quarantine to look out for symptoms of the disease and keep health officials informed of the situation.

Rajeev Sadanand, Additional Chief Secretary (Health and Family Welfare), the government of Kerala said that the health officials call the quarantined individuals regularly to check if they have developed any symptoms.

The Kerala government is trying its best to prevent a second wave of infections and remains on high alert as new Nipah virus deaths keep being reported.

The Health Minister of the state, KK Shylaja has said that although there is no cause for panic, anyone who has been in contact with known victims and is showing signs of the disease must get themselves admitted. She also informed that the state was expecting a second wave of infections but, they are prepared for it.
