Twitterati furious at NY Post journo for mocking Indian reporter at Trump presser

Washington: An American journalist from the New York Post came under fire on social media, for mocking and making disrespectful expressions at an Indian reporter during a press conference on coronavirus at the White House, Washington DC, on February 26.

At the press conference addressed by US President Donald J Trump, Indian journalist Raghubir Goyal had asked a question about the Indo-US ties post Trump’s maiden visit to India during the weekend.

Just a few rows behind him, the American reporter from the NY Post, identified as Ebony Bowden, was seen making faces and laughing at him. A video of the incident has gone viral and the Bowden has been widely criticised for her behaviour as she can be seen asking a fellow reporter, “Who is this guy?”

The video was posted to Twitter by user Damon imani (@damonimani) with the caption “Who is that reporter in the green mocking an Indian reporter? I bet she thinks Trump is racist” and in just a short while, garnered over 3 million views. Many accused the Bowden of being racist.

In a subsequent tweet, Damon wrote, “Not a drop of self awareness. I hope this reaches out to her.”

He also spoke out in support of Goyal writing in a now-deleted tweet, “Shoutout to Mr. Goyal. He has been a White House reporter since President Carter & he speaks better English than most of us speak Hindi.”

One Twitter user wrote, “It’s more than laughing. It’s the mocking and disdain in her eyes that sets me off. My father is south Asian and this just breaks my heart. It’s one thing to have opinions about other cultures but another to loathe him from behind and show so much contempt. Just for his accent.”

Another user wrote, “And She Had The Nerve To Say “Who Is This Guy? [sic]”

Twitter user CHERI (@heycheri) posted a high resolution video of the same incident a while later. “Anyone interested in the actual question and @realDonaldTrump’s response, here is a high quality clip from the @WhiteHouse Live Feed (recorded on my phone):” the user wrote.

However, Bowden’s friend, Elliot J Stein tried to defend her tweeting, “Twitter dot com can be good for breaking news sometimes but is terrible for hot takes and worse for out of context videos and reflections on people you don’t know. I know this – I’m really proud to call @ebonybowden a close mate and a friend.”

He too was slammed by the Twitterati.

“Well, this has been out here for a bit. Haven’t seen an apology, explanation or anything from Ebony,” wrote Arnold (@LingenArnold.

Another user wrote, “A good friend would be advising @ebonybowden to apologise to maybe salvage whatever credibility she may have left. Blindly defending and justifying her racist behaviour is not helping her or you.”
