Udupi : Wearing seat belts while driving cars and helmets while riding two-wheelers is compulsory, said Nisha James, Superintendent of Police Udupi District. She said that an awareness week would be launched in the district in relation to the traffic rules and regulations.
Speaking to media persons during the phone-in programme held at District Police office here on Friday, May 31, Nisha James said that people have misconception that seat belts are compulsory only in Commissionerate limits, but as per rules, it is mandatory everywhere if you are driving a car.
The SP said that a proposal had been submitted to the National Highway Authority of India to install signal lights on NH 66 as well as NH 169A in Udupi distric and in most of the traffic junctions at Padubidri, Katpady, Udyavara , Balaipade, Ambalpady, Santhekatte, Kundapur, Tallur and Hemmady on NH-66.
Meanwhile, a proposal also has been submitted to the NHAI overseeing the widening of NH 169A to install the signal lights at Malpe junction, Karavali junction, Bannanje junction, Shiribeedu junction, MGM College, Syndicate junction, Tiger Circle and MIT junction.
To a query, the SP said that it was necessary to lift the wreckage of Suvarna Tribhija boat, which had sunk off Malwan Coast in Maharastra on December 15, 2018. The wreckage was found by the Navy on May 1, 2019 and this would help in doing its physical examination. Since it was not possible for the Navy to lift the wreckage of the boat, the government needs to lift the wreckage of the boat with the help private agencies, she said.
Nisha James said that in order to ascertain the speed of the boat, direction and main cause of the sinking of the boat, physical verification of the boat was necessary which would be possible only after lifting the wreckage of the boat.
One caller said that the bus stand near the gate of the Government Hospital, Ajjarkadu needs to be shifted to another place so that it would be easy to enter the hospital as a lot of college students wait for the bus, blocking the way to the hospital. In response, the SP said that after a discussion with the CMC officials, action would be taken.
