Udupi: Water will be supplied within the Udupi city limits once in three days from Monday, March 25, said district Deputy Commissioner (DC) Hephsiba Rani Korlapati.

Addressing the media at the Udupi Press Club here on Saturday, March 23, the DC informed that she had carried out a study of the water situation in the city limits and gone through the steps taken by the authorities in the previous years to tackle the shortage of water in the city.

She explained that she had held discussions with the Udupi City Municipal officers and informed that the city council would soon issue a media notification detailing the steps taken to tackle the water shortage.

To a query about the water scarcity in rural areas, she said that the gram panchayats had been directed to give more importance to tackling the drinking water situation. “They have been told to provide water through tankers in areas where there is water scarcity. Meanwhile, those who are supplying water, need to equip their vehicles with GPS equipment. GPS is necessary to track the source of water, to ensure that safe drinking water is being provided,” she said.

When asked what steps the district administration would take in the light of the National Green Tribunal order regarding the 1,200 MW coal-based thermal power plant of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd., at Yellur in Udupi district, the DC said that the district administration had not received a copy of the order so far, although she admitted having read reports about it in the media. “Some other government agencies were involved in it. The district administration will look into the matter and take appreciate action,” she assured.

Sindhu B Rupesh, Udupi Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer was also present.
