Udupi district review meeting reveals heavy rains caused damages worth Rs 545 Cr

Udupi: MLC and Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary reviewed the losses suffered on various fronts due to the heavy rains that have been lashing the district during a meeting held at the Udupi DC office here on Thursday, August 23.

He directed all officials to ascertain the losses caused by heavy rains in the district and dispense compensation to those affected.

During the meeting, Assistant Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari said that the total loss caused by the rains was estimated to be around Rs 545 crores.

As many as five people lost their lives, more than 675 houses were partially destroyed and four houses were completely destroyed. Poojary said that the state government has declared a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs to owners whose houses were fully destroyed and Rs 1 lakh for those whose houses were partially damaged. Additionally, a monthly rent allowance of Rs 5,000 will be given to those who have lost their homes.

The Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI) said that 112 schools and a few Anganwadi buildings sustained damage in the rains.

The Horticulture Department officials informed that they had already assessed the losses and were about to issue compensation based on the total area of damaged plantations. A total of 18,000 hectares of horticulture crops were damaged in the district and the growers to be compensated have already been identified. As much as Rs 13,000 per coconut tree and Rs 3,000 per areca nut tree will be dispensed as compensation, said the minister.

On the infrastructure front, the Public Works Department engineers informed that 33 small bridges were damaged. Almost 1,851 meters of land was lost to sea erosion and the loss was estimated at Rs 2,065.75 lakhs. MESCOM officials said that 3,147 poles, 368 transformers and 81.81 km of electric wires were damaged. The estimated damage is said to be around Rs 1,166 lakhs.

Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary assured the officials that they need not do haphazard work to save costs.

‘We will try and solve all the problems caused by the heavy rains with the help of the Union and state governments,” he added.

Deputy Commissioner G Jagadish, SP Nisha James, MLA Raghupathi Bhat, Additional DC Vidya Kumari, District-in-charge Secretary Maheshwar Rao, ZP President Dinakar Babu, Vice-president Sheela K Shetty, taluk Tahsildars and other officials were present.
