Udupi: “In modern society, the number of joint families is declining, while the number of nuclear families is increasing. Children from far-away places are sending money every month to care of their parents,” said Udupi Zilla Panchayat Vice-President Sheela K Shetty,

Shetty was speaking at an event marking World Senior Citizen’s Day held at M. G. M. College’s Ravindra Mantapa on Tuesday, October 1.

The programme was jointly organised by the Udupi District Panchayat, District Women and Child Development Department, Disabled and Senior Citizens Empowerment Department, Health Department, District Legal Services Authority, Udupi District, Lawyers Association, Udupi District, Lawyers Association (RI), Udupi District, Udupi District Federation of Women’s Councils, (R) and Old Age Homes .

Shetty further said, “Our legacy of looking after elders with the utmost respect is rarely seen today. Senior citizens, who have had great experiences throughout their lives may be uneducated, but they are not stupid. There are still instances of children disowning their parents. The younger generation should cultivate a spirit of love and respect for senior citizens,” she said adding that children should never forget the sacrifices their parents have made for them.

Addressing the gathering, District Legal Services Authority secretary Kaveri said, “Parents who provide a good education for children and provide them with a good platform for their growth are often neglected by their children. Realising the current state of society and the behaviour of the children, the parents should give a share in the property to their children under condition that they will be cared for and kept comfortable.”

Kaveri also advised the senior citizens in the audience to maintain savings to care for themselves. “If there are any issues relating to service and facilities (policy matter) for senior citizens, the application should be submitted to the District Legal Services Authority to assist in finding a solution through the Karnataka State Legal Services Authority. The Karnataka State Legal Service Authority has the authority to file a petition for senior citizens policy matters. The State Authority has the power to direct the High Court if the Government does not do any work relating to senior citizens,” she added.

Kaveri also said that the government needed a workhouse for the protection of helpless senior citizens and suggested that senior citizens should call 1090 for help at any time.

Udupi Senior Citizens Union President AP Kodancha spoke about the demands of senior citizens while District Surveyor Dr Madhusudan provided information on health facilities available for senior citizens in the district.

Prizes were given away to the winners of various competitions held on the occasion of World Senior Citizens Day.

Earlier, District Disability and Senior Citizens Empowerment Officer Chandranaik welcomed the gathering and DNA Manager Rupalakshmi compered the programme. Planning Assistant Ganesh Marathe was delivered the vote of thanks.

Udupi Lawyers Association President Diwakar Shetty, Sarla B Kanchan, and others were present at the event.
