Teachers cannot use mobile inside classrooms: Edu Minister Suresh Kumar

Udupi: The state government has decided to prohibit the usage of mobile phones inside the classroom by the teachers.

The decision comes close on the heels of a video of a lower primary student struggling to pronounce a difficult Kannada word went viral. The video was reportedly shot by the teacher during the classes. In a fit of rage, the teacher who is shooting the episode ends up slapping the boy.

Education Minister Suresh Kumar instantly took up the issue and merely a few days after the video went viral, a circular on prohibiting the usage of mobile has been issued.

Suresh Kumar, who was in the city to inaugurate the new building of Government Higher Primary School at Mannur Padukere on Monday, January 13, also said that a helpline to solve the grievances of students, parents and teachers would be open from March 31.

“There are several philanthropists who want to come forward and help in constructing school buildings, libraries and laboratories for the government school and some who were even interested in teaching computer and English language. He said that such people were finding it difficult to visit government departments and also get permission from the departments. As a solution for this, the government has decided to launch an app for philanthropist, so that things get easier for them to avail permission for the plan that they want to implement”, said the minister.

Speaking about the heavy school bags and solution for it, Suresh Kumar said that the government will take necessary decision on reducing the weight of the school bags and introduce a system from the next academic year, where the students need not get their school bags for two days a month. The students will be encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities during these days.

After the inaugural of the new government school building, Suresh Kumar visited the BJP office. Speaking to the media he said, “We have already received many suggestions against introducing English medium government schools. Hence, a decision would be taken in this regard by holding a meeting with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa.”
