Udupi: The staff of the Navayuga toll gates on National Highway 66 at Hejamadi and Sasthan resorted to a spot strike on Friday, August 16 evening, against the non-payment of July’s salary.
The protesters said that both the toll gates were being managed by Marcoline Company, who handed over charge to the Navayuga Company after having recovered all their expenses till July. The around 180 protesting staffers accused Marcoline Company of only making assurances to disburse the salary without actually paying them.
The protest, which began at around 4 PM, was withdrawn at around 7.30 PM based on the assurances given by Hejamadi toll gate manager Shivaprasad Rai.
According to Rai, the flash strike, which lasted nearly four hours, cost the Navayuga Company about Rs 3 lakhs in revenue as vehicles passed through the toll gates freely during this time.
Panduranga Karkera, a social worker from Hejmady and Padubidri assistant police sub-inspectors Gangadhar and Sudesh Shetty were present at Hejamadi toll gate. Nithyananda Gowda Kota police station sub-inspector and team were present at the Sasthan toll plaza.
