Udupi: Hundreds of devotees from the city will attend the Shishya Swikara (appointment of junior seer) ceremony of Puttige Sugunendra Thirtha today at 11.45 AM at Puttige moola mutt in Puttige village near Hiriyadaka in Udupi. According to the source, Prashantha Acharya will be the successor of Sugunendra Thirtha seer.
Seers from the Ashtamatha of Udupi are expected to boycott the event saying Puttige Sugunendra Thirtha has no power to appoint his successor.
It is said that only the Krishnapura Mutt seer will participate in the event.
“The rest of the seers are boycotting the event claiming that Sugunendra Thirtha seer had crossed the sea and has hence lost his power to appoint his successor,” said sources in Udupi.
One of the many rules a seer has to follow is to remain bound to his country. Sagarolangana or crossing the sea is prohibited, while the seer in question has visited many countries.
According to the mutt sources, today is also the 45th anniversary of Sanyasa Deeksha of the Sugunedra Thirtha seer.
