Police collect Rs 3,69,200 in fines under new Motor Vehicle Act

Udupi: The Udupi district police have collected a total of Rs 3,69,200 from traffic rule violators since September 5, according to Nisha James, district Superintendent of Police.

The main traffic violations were for not wearing a helmet, not wearing a seat belt, using mobile phones while driving and not carrying vehicle insurance.

The new Motor Vehicle Act came into force on September 1, however, the new rules and regulations under the Act were implemented in the district only on September 6.

As per the act, driving without a helmet will attract a penalty of Rs 1,000 and a 3-month suspension of the license, driving without insurance is punishable with a fine of Rs 2,000, dangerous driving is punishable with a fine Rs 5,000, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be levied for not giving way to emergency vehicles, over-speeding will attract a fine of Rs 2000, drunken driving is punishable with a fine of Rs 10,000 and persons caught driving without a license will be fined Rs 5,000.
