Udupi: The plastic ban will be strictly enforced everywhere, including all urban local bodies and Gram Panchayats in the district from October 2. District Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh has warned that action will be taken against anyone caught using plastic.
He was addressing a press conference at the Udupi Municipal Council on Thursday, September 26. He informed that awareness about the plastic ban will be raised in the district from September 27 to October 2. During this time, officials will conduct raids and plastic found in any shop, the wholesale or retail outlet will be seized and flex and banners will be cleared. However, no fines will be levied. If plastic is found after October 2, action will be taken against the violators.
A comprehensive cleanup programme will be implemented across the district on October 2, against plastic manufacturers, suppliers, procurers, shippers, sellers and distributors. Action will also be taken against those using plastic in bouquets.
Plastic items, including plates, cups, spoons, films, table mats, flex banners, thermocol and materials containing plastic microbeads are banned. He added that the manufacture, storage and distribution of the banned plastic materials is strictly prohibited.
First-time offenders of the ban will be fined up to Rs 1,000 and second-time offenders will be fined Rs 2000. Another violation of the ban will result in the cancellation of the trade licence.
Udupi City Municipal Commissioner Anand Kallolikar was also present.
