Mock demonstration of Tsunami rescue operation held in Malpe

Udupi: A mock demonstration of the necessary actions to be taken by the departments concerned during Tsunami and other natural calamities, was conducted on Saturday, June 8, near Hanuman Bajana Mandir in Malpe.

During the mock demonstration, the Udupi Fire Department on receiving a Tsunami warning, arrived at the seashore and cautioned the public to stay away from the sea. The Fire Brigade also rescued the tourists drowning in the sea and after the first aid, shifted them to the health centre, which was opened for Tsunami victims at the Yeluru Mogaveera Bhavana, Malpe.

Two ambulances from the Health Department and two Fire Department vehicles were used in the rescue operation. The Revenue Department staff shifted the people living close to the sea, to the flood victims’ centre at Yeluru Mogaveera Bhavana, in buses. Food and health check-up facilities were arranged in the centre.

Speaking about the mock demonstration, Additional Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari said that it was conducted to see how the District Administration responds in case of natural calamities and also to direct all the departments to be prepared for such emergencies.

“The mock demonstration will help in finding out which are the areas we need to work on and also to make the necessary arrangements in case of actual calamities,” said Vidya Kumari.

“Sludge removing task, cutting the branches of trees to prevent electric supply from being damaged and measures to prevent the national highways from being covered with rain water is being carried by the departments concerned. The Fire Department, Police, Home Guards, Health Department and the Revenue Department staff have been directed to be prepared in case of any natural calamities,” she said.

“Measures have been taken to distribute funds from the District Natural Disaster Fund to the departments concerned to be prepared with the necessary equipment for disaster management,” Vidya Kumari added.

District Disaster Management Expert Ravi Ojanhalli said that all the necessary measures had been taken, including shelter for the victims and providing them with the basic necessities, in case of any natural calamities.

“The victims after being given primary medical treatment, will be given ribbons depending on the severity of their condition. Red ribbons for emergency cases, yellow ribbon for less serious condition, green ribbon for minor injuries and black ribbon in case of death. This will help the Health Department to identify the seriousness of the victims’ condition and treat accordingly,” said Ravi Ojanhalli.

Udupi Tahsildar Pradeep Kurdekar, DySP Jaishankar, Malpe Police Inspector Madhu, DHO M G Rama, Assistant Director of Fisheries Department Shivakumar, District Fire Department Officer Vasanth Kumar, Assistant Commandant of Home Guard Department Ramesh, Secretary of Udupi Red Cross Balakrishna Shetty, Lions Club President Dr. Suresh Shenoy, Fishermen Association President Satish Kunder among many others were present during the mock demonstration.
