Barkur: Renowned Konkani film director Harry Fernandes Barkur was, on December 18, conferred the “Konkani Cine Kala Samrat” award on the occasion of the parish feast of the newly renovated St Peter’s Church in Barkur. Harry has the distinct qualification of having worked in the Hindi, Bhojpuri, Marathi and Konkani film industries.
The programme was presided over by St Peter's Church parish priest Rev. Fr. Philip Neri Aranha. Former president of the St Peter's Association Felix Barnes and secretary Vincent D'Almeida, California, USA, were the chief guests.
The award conferred on Harry Fernandes comprised a citation (mann-potr) detailing his manifold achievements, which were read out by the founder-secretary of the SPA Barkur-Mumbai, Archibald Furtado. The former was then decorated with a garland, bouquet, colourful headgear and a basket of fresh fruits by the parish priest and the guests on the dais.
Addressing the gathering, an emotional Harry Fernandes recalled his days in Barkur in the 60s and thanked all the residents for their constant support, encouragement and magnanimity. He also expressed his contentment with the response shown by the audience the world over, towards his directorial "Benddkar".
In his presidential address, Fr Philip said that he was proud to be part and parcel of the Barkur residents for the past two to three years. He expressed his happiness at having been acquainted with a personality such as Harry Fernandes. He then congratulated the director on his various achievements. He concluded his speech by telling the director that he expected to see more "masterpieces" in the years to come.
Speaking on behalf of the organisers of the event, Vincent D'Almeida lauded Harry for his talents saying, We the people of Barkur assure you our patronage in all your endeavours." He then appreciated the ICYM for its initiatives and invited all its members to attend an upcoming conclave of all ICYM members of the last 43 years (1976-2019) on December 23.
Later, the Vicar honoured "Benddkar" artistes Alwyn and Sujatha Andrade, Archibald Furtado, Dolphy D'Souza, Jessie Menezes, Ivan Furtado, Sylvan D'Almeida, John Picardo, Oswald Fernandes, Patrick D'Silva, Edwin Picardo and Patrick D'Almeida. The New Jolly Band from Perampally, production manager Prem D'Souza, film editor Abhishek and others were also felicitated on the occasion.
On the same evening, the recently released Konkani film "Benddkar" was played for the large audience gathered at the Church's open grounds, after the felicitation of the movie's director.
The film was received well by the audience, who comprised members of the Barkur and the neighbouring parishes. The movies ran from 7 PM to 10 PM. There was also a dance session towards the end and the music was provided by a live band.
Pastoral Council vice-president Jerald Gonsalves, secretary Vivet Lewis, convener of the commissions Dolphy D'Souza, Barkur priest Rev. Fr. Cyprian Henry D'Souza, Mother Superior of the IHM Convent Sr Jasmitha, Varado ICYM president Venrold Lewis, Yuva Ayog president Alwyn D'Almeida and ICYM president Glen Furtado were also present.
