Udupi: Smart Antibiotic Use, a case based interactive CME-Workshop sponsored by ICMR, New Delhi and jointly organized by AGE, KMC, Manipal and IMA, will be held on Sunday, March 17, at Dr. T M A Pai Hall, in Manipal.

Speaking in a press meet at Udupi Press Club on Saturday, March 16, Dr. Chiranjay Mukhopadhyay, Associate Dean, KMC Manipal, said that antibiotic resistance is a global threat that doctors and hospitals are increasingly facing these days while treating patients with bacterial infection.

He said, “Many bacterias these days do not die in spite of our antibiotics. They survive by developing resistance to it, thus making many of the antibiotic drugs ineffective. This is posing a huge challenge. We see people with simple and common infections, end up with complications and then die as a result of this. We do not have enough remedies (antibiotics) to handle these resistant strains. Some are even resistant to many drugs, we call them multi drug resistant organisms.”

There are many causes for antibiotic resistance, and overuse of drugs when it is actually not necessary is one of the reasons.

Antibiotics are the drugs that are to be used very cautiously, in right doses and for a specified period of time. They can be taken only after the concerned doctor prescribes it. They should not be taken without doctor’s advice and supervision. Antibiotics if used indiscriminately can cause harm to the individual in addition to developing antibiotic resistance.

IMA (Indian Medical Association) of Udupi Karavali branch along with AGE (Antibiotic Guardianship and Education) and KMC Manipal, is conducting CMC (Continuing Medical Education) for members of IMA, Udupi district, that includes Karkala and Kundapura branches of IMA. ICMR (Indian Council for Medical Research), New Delhi, is sponsoring this academic activity.

Dr. Shashikiran Umakanth, Organizing Secretary, Dr. Gurumurthy Bhat President, IMA Udupi-Karavali branch, Dr. Krishnananda Mallya, Joint Organizing Secretary, Dr. Vandana KE, Dr. Murlidhar Varma were present during the press meet.
