Udupi: A lawsuit was filed against the successor to the Puttige Math in the Udupi District court on Wednesday, May 8, by former Junior Peetadhipati of the Pejawar Math Sri Vishwa Vijaya.

Sri Vishwa Vijaya, in his suit, has challenged the Puttige Math pontiff, Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji’s right to choose a successor. He has argued that as the pontiff has visited foreign countries, he has lost the right to offer puja by touching the idol of Lord Sri Krishna and the right to give the Sanyasa Deeksha to his successor.

He has also claimed that the recently appointed successor, Prashanth Acharya is not suited for the Sanyasa Deeksha as he has not studied the Veda, Vedanta, Tarka, Vyakarana and Sanskrit. He doesn’t have the basic qualification to become the successor of the Puttige Math, he charged.

It can be recalled that on April 22, Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji offered the Sanyasa Deeksha to Prashanth Acharya amidst some controversy. The event was boycotted by the pontiffs of the other Astha Mathas as they stated that the Swamiji did not have the right to appoint his successor as he had been overseas.

The event was attended by prominent personalities such as Udupi MLA Raghupathi Bhat and Kaup MLA Lalaji Mendon.
