Udupi: We need to provide good services to the people and work according to their needs so that we can solve their problems, said newly-appointed Udupi Deputy Commissioner (DC) G Jagadeesha.

After listening to the people’s grievances at the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) meeting at the Sathyamurthy Hall, Udupi on August 29, Jagadeesha asked the municipal council officials to report to the field every day at 6 am and go home early.

The DC said that he is familiar with the city since he had previously worked for former Dakshina Kannada DC Ponnuraj and former Udupi DC Hemalatha. “I have led several developmental works in urban areas and possess knowledge about policy. I am proud to say that Mysuru had bagged the Swachh Suruvekshan Cleanest City award when I was the Mysuru City Corporation Commissioner. Cleaning up Udupi will not be a challenge it is smaller that Mysuru city,” he added.

Jagadeesha further stressed on the need to purchase and utilise tools in order to work more efficiently.

He also directed the officials to treat the city councillors with respect and affection as they are the elected representatives of the people.

At the meeting, the councillors complained about the drainage system in various places, street lights, stray dogs and potholes. They also brought up local issues such as restoration of the Indrani river and the short-handed City Municipality.

MLA Raghupathi Bhat said that since water and electricity are fundamental to the people, the Chief Minister had sanctioned Rs 25 crores to the city for these purposes. An additional Rs 5 crores has been approved to fix the PWD roads.

Councillors Ramesh Kanchan, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Sumithra Nayak, Geetha Seth, Krishnarao Kodancha, Prabhakar Poojary, Celine Karkada, Manjula Nayak, Yogish Salian and Vijayalakshmi were among those who aired their grievances.

The Udupi CMC Commissioner Anand Kallolikar was also present.
