Udupi: The Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samiti Udupi and other like-minded associations staged a protest at Martyrs Memorials, Ajjarkadu near the Bhujanga park on November 14, demanding the sacking of Chief Secretary of Karnataka state, Umashankar, for insulting Dr B R Ambedkar.
The protest was held against the BJP government and the education department for its statement in a circular, that Ambedkar wasn’t the only person who framed the Indian Constitution.
Speaking on the occasion, social activist G Raj Shekhar condemned the State Chief secretary’s circular to the schools, in which it was written that Ambedkar wasn’t the only one to establish the Indian Constitution. “The first sentence in the constitution is against the BJP’s ideology. There is no mention of a Hindu nation in the Constitution. Equality, justice and solidarity were given priority,” he said and added the BJP and its affiliated organizations were opponents of the basic wish of the Constitution.
Jayan Malpe, a senior leader of the organisation said that it is because of Ambedkar’s constitution that a tea seller found it possible to become the Prime Minister and a newspaper seller to become the President of India. “The BJP is now trying to change history and teach a modified history to the children,” he claimed. He then added that a state-wide protest would soon be held against the BJP government.
To show their outrage, the protesters burned the circular towards the end of the protest.
