Udupi: The beaches of Udupi are already extremely popular among tourists. May it be Malpe or Kaup, young and old love to spend some time in the company of the soothing ocean. However, now the district administration is gearing up to get the prestigious ‘Blue Flag’ recognition for all the beaches in the district, which will add to the experience of the tourists here.
Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh has said that all the beaches in the district must be developed in such a manner that they become eligible for the ‘Blue Flag tag’.
The Blue Flag is a certification by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach, marina, or sustainable boating tourism operator meets its stringent standards. The Blue Flag is a trademark owned by FEE which is a not-for-profit non-governmental organization consisting of 65 organizations in 60 member countries. FEE’s Blue Flag criteria include standards for quality, safety, environmental education and information, the provision of services and general environmental management criteria. The Blue Flag is sought for beaches, marinas, and sustainable boating tourism operators as an indication of their high environmental and quality standards.
Speaking on these lines, the DC said that there is a need to study the existing Blue Flag beaches in the district and emulate those aspects in the rest of the beaches in Udupi and ensure that each and every beach gets the tag in phases. He suggested that college students could be roped in to make a study on the difference between the Blue Flag recognized beaches and the rest.
Meanwhile, the DC said that there are complaints that the boat operators in Malpe are overloading passengers during the trips to St Mary’s Island. In this regard, he directed the Municipal Commissioner to withdraw the permission given to erring operators as the safety of the passengers is of utmost importance.
