Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea pulled off a massive upset on day eight of Wimbledon by beating men’s doubles top seeds Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan in a thrilling quarterfinal.
The ninth seed pair came back from one set down to win 5-7, 6-4, 7-6 (9), 7-6 (5) in two hours and 34 minutes.
The Bryan brothers managed to save two out of three match points in the fourth set but Mergea slammed an ace on his second serve on the third match point to seal a fantastic win.
The Bryan brothers actually won more points – 160 to 155 – but still ended up on the losing side. Bopanna and Mergea combined to hit 31 winners while the Bryan brothers managed just 12.
Bopanna-Mergea continue their good run on grass, having won the title at Stuttgart and reached the final at Halle. They will now face fourth-seeds Jean-Julien Rojer of Netherlands and Horia Tecau of Romania in the semi-finals.
