Shivamogga: The people of Shivamogga are planning to stage a protest condemning the state government’s decision to draw water to Bengaluru, from the district’s Linganamakki Reservoir.
Deputy Chief Minister Dr. G Parameshwara has ordered to submit a Detailed Project Report (DPR) to draw water from Linganamakki Reservoir, which is 430 kms from Bengaluru, through pipelines, as the city faces shortage of drinking water. However, outraged by the government’s decision, the locals of Shivamogga district are planning to stage a protest.
A forum has been formed to save Sharavathi river water, and all the political parties of the district, progressive organizations, environmentalists and the populace living in the villages near the banks of Sharavathi river will be joining hands in the protest.
Progressive activists Harsha Kugve, H B Raghavendra, journalist Sashi Sampalli, environmentalist Akhilesh Chippalli and many others have come together to protest. A discussion regarding forming a convener committee and a study committee has been carried out, to explain the government the possible problems and effects of drawing water from the reservoir. Former minister Kagodu Thimmappa, Legislator Hartalu Halappa, theatre artists including director and playwright K V Akshara, gram panchayat members, former ministers, legislators and political leaders are preparing for a step-by-step protest.
A meeting in this regard will be held on Saturday, June 22, at the Government Employees Hall in Sagar, at 5 PM.
