Shivamogga facing threat of drought

Shivamogga: Along with several districts in the state, Shivamogga too has been facing a scarcity of water this season. Usually, almost all the areas in the city were supplied with drinking water every morning but now the supply has been cut down to once in three days. If this continues, soon there will be no water even to drink. People have already started talking that if there is no sufficient rainfall this year to fill Tunga river, the district might have to face drought.

It was once thought that as Tunga river is always flowing with water, there will not be drinking water problem for many years. However, it has been proven wrong this time as the river body in Gajanur is becoming dry.

Out of the 3.5 TMC water stored in Gajanur Dam, only 1.5 TMC water is remaining and the dead storage level has not yet been confirmed.

Speaking to media regarding the water crisis, Deputy Commissioner K A Dayananda said that if the district does not receive rainfall and Tunga river is not filled by July 10, there will be drinking water problem in Shivamogga.

“The district received a good amount of pre-monsoon rainfall from February last year. Also due to a timely monsoon, there was no water crisis last year. However, this year, there has been a poor pre-monsoon rainfall and if the monsoon does not start at the right time, there will surely be a drought like situation,” said DC Dayananda.
