Shivamogga: The heavy rains in the state are wreaking all sorts of havoc for the people. Owing to the incessant rains and floods in North Karnataka and its neighbouring districts, including parts of Maharashtra, parts of the state are facing a shortage of onions. According to traders, this shortage has led to the sky-rocketing of onion prices to Rs 30 per kg in some parts of Karnataka.
As per a report by ANI, one of the traders said that the onions have gone from costing Rs 15 per kg before the floods to Rs 30 per kg in the wholesale market. “In retail stores and at street vendors’ stalls, onions cost as much as Rs 40 per kg. We use onions grown here as also import them from Maharashtra. Now that the roads in North Karnataka have been damaged by the floods, the supply of onions have been affected,” he said.
Traders have also expressed fear that the prices may further rise to Rs 60 due to the festival season.
A customer expressed worry that it will be difficult to manage a house if the prices go on increasing. “People cannot afford to buy such expensive onions. If this continues it will be difficult for a large section of the people to manage their households,” they said.
