Shivamogga: Wildlife activists have criticised BJP MP B Y Raghavendra for asking them to keep monkeys and other wild animals in their houses since they were so concerned.

It all started when the activists told Raghavendra to abandon his proposal to construct a monkey park near the Chakranagar forest in the Hosanagara taluk. They urged him to reforest nearly 60,000 hectares of land belonging to the now-defunct Mysore Paper Mills instead.

In response to opposition from the wildlife activists against the monkey park, Raghavendra had said, “Wildlife activists will oppose the proposed park. Protecting the environment is important. But, at the same time, the interest of the farmers should be protected. If forest officials are concerned about wild animals that trouble farmers, let them keep them in the zoo. Let the activists keep wild animals such as monkeys, elephants and bisons in their houses.”

Speaking to The New Indian Express, activist Akhilesh Chipli said, “We environmentalists are ready to adopt wild animals. Let the government allow us to do so. MPs should talk responsibly and relocating monkeys is not a good idea.”

Calling the move to relocate monkeys impractical, activist Ajay Kumar Sharma said, “Influential politicians have built educational institutions in the Shettihalli Forest. Many people have enroached land to take up agricultural activities. As the habitats of monkeys are declining, they are entering human habitats in search of food.”

Sharma further said that instead of a monkey park, the government should plant fruit-bearing trees in forests so that the monkeys can feast on them.
