Shivamogga: As there seems to be no end to the pouring rains, the district administration has issued “Red Alert” on Friday, August 9 night, based on the weather reports received from the Indian Meteorological Department. The Met Department has predicted even more heavy rains in several parts of the district.
The rains which have been ceaselessly pouring heavily since last midnight, have continued into this morning.
The Shivamogga City Corporation Commissioner, Charulatha Somal and Tahsildar Girish have gotten involved in helping the flood victims at the relief camps, looking after the supply of adequate food and other basic necessities. The duo have also updated district in-charge Secretary of Shivamogga, P Manivannan about the situation.
Areas like Bharathi Nagar, Ashwath Nagar and other farm areas have been completely submerged.
The situation in Bapuji Nagar has turned worse as water has entered many of the houses, forcing the residents to evacuate and move to Ganji Kendra.
Among the 36 wards that come under the city corporation, 16 wards have been badly affected.
Around five Ganji Kendra’s, which have been opened to aid in the relief work, are now home to around 1,600 people who are being fed here.
People stranded in the flood affected areas have been requested to call the helpline numbers set up by the district administration.
Taking to Twitter about the situation, Manivannan wrote that if the water level continues to rise in the rivers, more Ganji Kendra’s will be opened.
We’ll have to find an alternative channel to make the excessive river water flow. Let us see if it is possible to find a place with the help of a drone. We’ll take a decision after checking all perspectives. The Tungabhadra River has also surpassed its limits, he tweeted.
