Committed to providing international quality sports infrastructure: Kiran Rijiju

Shivamogga: The Union Government is committed to providing international quality sports infrastructure to Karnataka State to equip future sportspersons, said Union Sports Minister Kiran Rijiju.

He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the construction of the Rs. 5 Crs indoor stadium at Sahyadri College on Sunday.

He said that there is a good positive atmosphere in the State for sports activities. All the demands made by the State Government are being met one by one for the promotion of sports activities. All assistance will be provided to make the Shivamoga district a good sports centre not only in Karnataka but also in the country. He said he expected more gold medals from Karnataka in the next Olympics.

Commenting on India having the largest number of young people in the world, he added that we have a lot of opportunities to excel in sports. The Government of India is implementing various schemes to identify and encourage sports talents. Under the Khelo India scheme, more assistance will be provided to Karnataka state. The youth should take maximum advantage of this.

The goal is to at least bag 10 of the medals at the 2028 Olympics. Preparations for the Olympics in India in the coming years have already been started at various stages. About 70% of the country’s population does not perform any physical exercises. The development of the country will only be possible if it is healthy. The Fit India scheme was implemented in this context.

District In-charge Minister K S Eshwarappa said efforts would be made to provide sports infrastructure to the Sahyadri College.
