Agricultural activities gear up in the district as rain intensifies

Shivamogga: The monsoon already entered into Shivamogga district and the heavy rain continued on Sunday June 14 also.

While Shivamogga Town has got 5.6 mm rain, Bhadravathi got 7.2 mm, Shikaripura 8.4 mm, Soraba 14.3 mm, Sagara 18 mm, Theerthahalli 32.2 mm and Hosanagar taluk has got 47.2 mm rain during the last 24 hours.

As monsoon already entered, the agriculture activities geared up. Shivamogga district has 2.60 lakh hectares of agricultural land, in which 1.12 lakh hectares of land is being used for arecanut cultivation. The department of agriculture is planning to grow other agricultural crops in the remaining 1.48 lakh hectare land, informed the Joint Director of Agriculture Department Kiran.

Kiran also informed that the department is planning to cultivate paddy in 92,000 hectares land, maize in 53,000 hectares land, sugarcane in 1000 hectares land, and cotton in 365 hectares land. When compared to last year, agriculture land has become less by around 5000 hectares this year. The department had planned to grow agricultural crops in 1.53 lakh hectares land in the previous year.
