The Sevanjali Charitable Trust (R), in partnership with Yuva Brigade and Tandoor Express, is providing free meals to patients who have tested Covid positive and are isolated to their homes in the city. Vedavyas Kamath, Mangaluru city local MLA, is the organisation’s president, with Naresh Shenoy as secretary and Hanumanth Kamat as trustee.

Speaking to News Karnataka Chethan Kamath, member of the team said that, “We provided meals for people from the first day of the last lockdown. As a result, when the lockdown was announced this year, we did the same. Every day, we distribute approximately 5000 meals and food packages throughout the city. This also applies to patients at Wenlock Covid Hospital where a total of 350 lunches and 350 dinners are provided. These are given free of charge, including delivery. We also give evening snacks. Apart from this, we give masks, sanitisers, soaps, PPE kits, gloves, toothpastes and clothing on a weekly basis.”

This initiative is supported by around 32 volunteers. They claim to supply high-quality food so that it is not wasted. The trust has also decided to insure the lives of funeral workers, their spouses, and their children with a Rs 200,000 policy. “We also volunteer to perform cremations for those who do not have family or whose family members are unable to come here to perform the final rites. When we volunteer for things like this, we strictly adhere to the rules,” said Chethan.

The Sevanjali Trust also provides Rs 1000 in financial assistance to those from the marginalised part of society for a period of four weeks. In addition, 25 dedicated volunteers of Bajrang Dal will be given an insurance cover of Rs 50000. Given the present situation in the state, the organisation is also preparing to purchase oxygen cylinders, and has already made an order for 100 from Dubai.

The trust has been assisting senior citizens with the health problems as well as providing educational scholarships to students. “Pensions are offered to elderly women who have no family members to look after them. Anyone in Mangaluru who is experiencing difficulties can call us at any moment,” added Chethan.

Naresh Prabhu, Sidharth Prabhu, Santhosh Bhandary, Pandurang Nayak, Sachin Shenoy, Nagesh Shenoy, Sudarshan Bhat, Anirudh Bhat and Kaushal Karia are actively working to assist people during these difficult times.
