Since April, India has seen a surge in covid cases, with each day active cases being reported at a larger number than the day before. Lancet’s study indicates that there could be over 1000 deaths per day in June and with the second wave putting the country’s healthcare system in a fix, its really just a waiting game now.

A small hope that the people now have is that the vaccination drive has started. India on Sunday April 25 marks 100 days since the start of its vaccination drive which began on January 16 this year. The Union ministry of health and family welfare notes that within 99 days, India has become the fastest country to administer 14 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses.
But the thing to consider here is that the rush which India is experiencing in the Hospitals due to the vaccination may lead to surge in cases.

The hospitals are already overburdened with patients and the doctors and nurses are traumatised by overworking. WHO says rush to hospitals may worsen India COVID crisis. At this juncture, the fear associated with the disease has tripled and the people are in a rush to get themselves vaccinated.

Even though citizens have to register to get administered with the vaccine, many unregistered have gathered at the hospitals and are given the jibe. This has added to the increase in the number of people in the hospitals where the public was initially advised to stay away from if there is no dire need.

Speaking to news Karnataka Dr. Srinivas Kakillaya said, “there is an increase in transmission as more and more people are rushing to the hospitals which are already overwhelmed with covid cases.” He said that more people are getting exposed to the virus when they go to the hospitals and this should not be the case. The medical infrastructure is already taking in more than it can handle and with the onset of vaccination, the work has been tripled. “Instead of celebrating and announcing programs like ‘Tika Utsav’, the government should make sure that separate buildings are set up which will work as vaccination centers only,” he added.
