Abu Dhabi: The Embassy of India, Abu Dhabi wrote to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation in connection with Clifford Joseph Rebello‘s case.

In their letter to the MOFAIC, the Embassy said that they met with Rebello, who has been confined at the Castles Hotel in Abu Dhabi since October 10, and obtain information about his circumstances.

They found out that, since he was “detained at the Castles Hotel”, he has been “unable to buy food and is starving which is against the rules & regulations of UAE”.

As per the information received from Rebello, his former employer had not honoured the Dubai Labour court’s order (dated November 1, 2018), which stated that the Abu Dhabi-based company had to pay him around AED 93,000.

The Embassy then requested the Ministry to “direct the concerned authorities to expedite issuance and execution of the Court order for Mr. Clifford and also direct the company representatives… to allow his free movement”.

It can be recalled that Clifford Joseph Rebello (54) has reportedly been stranded in Dubai without money or a passport since July 2014, after his employer illegally terminated his employment. His employer, Coppins Holdings illegally terminated his employment, never paid his wages and also withheld his passport. Rebello’s situation was brought to the public’s attention by the efforts of a social activist (who wishes to remain anonymous) who contacted NewsKarnataka.com.
