Robin Hoods in Mysuru pacify hunger of hundreds of needy!

Mysuru: They say there is no bigger act close to God than feeding a hungry soul. If that is true than the Robin Hood Army, a volunteer group involving students, professionals and homemakers is surely the luckiest to have earned the blessings.

This group goes to hostels, food joints/restaurants/ hotels to collect surplus food and makes sure that this food is consumed by the hungry and the less fortunate ones.

Hunger is a reality in the world and no matter how many schemes the government brings in someone or the other remains away from nutrition and food. The plight of hungry individuals can be seen at Mysuru railway station where people form a beeline to collect the food supplied by the Robin Hood Army.

Every night, the Army reaches the station after collecting food from both Mysuru Medical College Hostels (men and women hostels) and Just Delhi restaurant, who prepare extra food to provide to these people at about 9.45 to 10 pm.

Within a few minutes, the cauldrons run empty and the hungry men and women are seen relishing the food that has come to them.
Started in 2015 in Delhi, Robin Hood Army is doing yeomen service for humanity. Sushma Manjunath, who is pursuing Ph.D in All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) is also a volunteer with the Army.

She says that the Army now has a presence in 151 cities across the world and each and every volunteer strives very hard to ensure that food is not wasted at places where large quantity is cooked.

“We feel bad when food is wasted in hotels, hostels and marriage halls. Hence we decided to distribute the food among the needy and most of the time the response from the givers has been positive. We plan the day through our Whatsapp group.

We usually go to the railway station to distribute the food, but in case there is surplus food, we also go to Cheluvamba temple, some orphanage, slums and other places where people might be hungry,” she said adding that the Army is zero-funded organization and there is need for more and more volunteers to join hands.

“We spend from our own pockets to meet transportation and other expenditure. Hence we need more like-minded people,” she said.

Revanna, one of the beneficiaries says that the volunteers are doing such a great deed that they will be blessed abundantly by God.
