Operation to chase away tigress goes awry; one dies in accidental firing

Mysuru: One person died and two others sustained injuries when an operation to scare away a tigeress here in Malali village in H D Kote on December 29 went awry.

The deceased has been identified as Murthy(25) son of Nanjappa from N Belathur village. Forest officers Mahesh and Kempaiah from Hosaholalu village suffered injuries.

The tigress along with its cubs had entered the Banana plantation of Kirabannana Maya in Malali village from past one week. Several domestic animals fell prey to the tigeress. The villagers hence informed forest officials and an operation was started four days ago. Over 40 people were involved in the operation and main intention was to chase the tigress to the forest from the plantation. The officials in a bid to drive the tigress back to forest fired in the air and accidentally Murthy was shot dead.

Forest officer Mahesh and villager Kempaiah too were injured in the accidental firing. They have been shifted to a nearby hospital.

Meanwhile, the state government has announced Rs 2 lakh compensation.
