Mysuru: The city’s heritage buildings such as KR Hospital and Ayurvedic Hospital are on the verge of collapsing due to heavy rains. The buildings may be ruined unless maintenance and renovation work is undertaken immediately.

Both hospitals witness hundreds of patients every day and employees such as doctors and nurses continue to work under fear whenever it rains.

Members from the Expert Committee for Development and Protection of Mysuru Heritage Region visited both the hospitals and recommended immediate renovation.

Mysuru University Professor and committee member N S Rangaraju said, “A few days back, we inspected both the hospitals and found that there was a lack of maintenance. When leaves fall on the building, water gets choked and plants start to grow. Once the plant roots start to grow, seepage begins and the portion gets wet. The calcium (with which the building is constructed) gets dissolved and plasters start falling.”

“We have informed the authorities of both hospitals to maintain the structures by putting chemicals and removing the plants,” he added.

KR Hospital Superintendent Dr Nanjundaswamy said, “Some of the buildings are more than 100 years. Wherever repair work needs to be done, we have brought this to the notice of our PWD engineers who in turn bring it to the notice of the heritage committee to take up the work.”

Ayurveda Hospital Principal Dr Gajanana Hegde said, “The hospital is more than 100 years old, the tender for the repair work is under progress and work will commence once this process is complete.”
