Mysuru: Mysuru, which broke the record for the largest gathering at a single venue, is one among the four cities shortlisted to host this year’s International Yoga day celebration.

Speaking about Mysuru’s selection, Deputy Commissioner (DC) D Randeep said that it was possible that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was impressed by the city during his visit in February. “Through the Member of Parliament (MP) Pratap Simha, I had given a booklet to the Prime Minister showing our achievement of setting the world record and even invited him to this year’s celebrations. He must have been impressed and therefore shortlisted Mysuru this time. So far only North Indian cities were shortlisted,” said DC Randeep.

In anticipation of the International Yoga Day celebrations, a core committee of six members headed by the DC was formed two weeks ago, said DC Randeep adding that Ministry of Ayurveda, Yoga and Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha and Homoeopathy (AYUSH) joint secretary informed him that a team would be sent to Mysuru to study the logistics.

World record: With 55,506 participants, Mysuru entered the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest gathering at a single venue held on the occasion of the International Yoga Day at a spacious 139 acre Mysore Race Course on June 21, 2017.

In the chain link yoga, 8381 students from various schools and colleges especially those studying in standards six to 12, turned out for the record breaking longest chain link yoga event organised by the district administration at the Mysuru Palace premises on June 19, 2017.
