MR Dhanusha of University of Mysore to represent India at World University Games

Mysuru: Nineteen-year-old MR Dhanusha, first year BBA student at Basudev Somani College, Mysuru, who had won her first gold medal in the heptathlon event in the 79th All India Inter-University Athletics Meet, has been selected to represent Indian Universities Athletics team at the World University Games, which will be held at Napoli in Italy from July 3 to 14 this year.

Dhanusha’s father who hails from KR nagar works as a auto driver. She is trained by the Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports.

Dhanusha with the support and encouragement from her University of Mysore athletic coach Prabhakar and her Physical Education Director of Basudev Somani College Sadashiva Bhatt practices for atleast six hours every day. The hardwork which she had put for the past few months helped her to come out with an impressive performance in the heptathlon event by securing overall 4,785 points which enabled her to fetch gold medal in the All India Inter University Athletic competition. Dhanusha’s performance enabled her to get shortlisted for India University camp where she got selected to represent Indian University Athletic team at the World University Games.

An elated Dhanusha speaking to Newskarnataka said “I have managed to achieve this due to the support from my coaches including SAK athletic coach Punith, University of Mysore athletic coach Prabhakar and Physical Education Director Sadashiva Bhatt sir. I want to represent my country and bring home many medals”. She also attributed her success to her parents Manju and Rukmini, to K Suresh, Assistant Director of Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports and to Kavya of DYES, Mysuru.

G Hemantha Kumar, Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore said “It’s really an outstanding achievement from Dhanusha who happens to be the first athlete from the University to represent India at the World University Games. With this achievement she has brought lot of laurels to our university. Winning gold medal in heptathlon event was itself a great achievement”.

University of Mysore has sanctioned Rs 2.26 lakh to Dhanusha which she has to pay to participate in the World University Meet.

Sadashiva Bhatt, Physical Education Director, Basudev Somani College said “It is really a great achievement by Dhanusha. She has got a bright future. The management has assured to provide financial assistance as to her required for the sports training”. P Krishnaiah, Director, Department of Physical Education, University of Mysore, also congratulated Dhanusha.

K Suresh, Assistant Director, DYES, Mysuru said “She is an outstanding and a promising athlete. We will try and provide financial assistance from our Department of Youth Empowerment and Sports as well”.
