Mysuru: For the first time in India, JSS Science and Technology University will set up an exclusive Computer Science Engineering department for people with disabilities at the JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled in the SJCE campus.

Many students, after pursuing three years of Computer Science diploma courses at JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled, found it difficult to pursue their higher studies. Seeing the plight of these students, the JSS Science and Technology requested the AICTE to approve an exclusive Computer Science Engineering course for the differently abled, which will most likely start from this academic year itself.

JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled is located at the SJCE campus, which is the first and only polytechnic institution in the country established exclusively for the differently abled under the World Bank assistance scheme of the Government of Karnataka. It offers six three-year diploma courses (six semesters), namely Architecture, Commercial Practice, Computer Science and Engineering, Jewellery Design and Technology, Electronics and Communication Engineering and Computer Applications for the visually impaired. The number of students pursuing higher education has also gone up in recent years. More than 15 percent of them also prefer to take up higher education, which includes engineering, B Com, BBM or B Arch.

Speaking to Newskarnataka.com B G Sangameshwar, Vice Chancellor, JSS Science and Technology University said. “There is a demand from our differently abled students to start an exclusive Computer Science Engineering course for them. The process for this exclusive course has almost been completed and by this academic year itself we will start the course for the differently abled students with an intake of 20 students.”

B Elangovan, Principal of JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled said, “At JSS Polytechnic for the Differently Abled, we offer six different courses. Computer Science and Engineering is one among them and has an intake of 60 students. Many students get through the entrance exam for second year engineering in regular colleges, but they say that they find it difficult to understand, forcing some of them to discontinue. This exclusive course is not only for our students, but also for other differently abled students as well. First, we will offer the computer science course and later on, we will think about other courses based on the demand.”

The admissions for various diploma courses for differently-abled have already begun and those interested can submit their applications on or before June 15.
