Mysuru: Mahisha Dasara, an event held atop the Chamundi Hills’ at the Mahishasura statue, will be held this year as well, said the Dalit Welfare Trust members during a press meet in the city on Tuesday.

The press meet was attended by progressive thinkers Prof. K S Baghavan, Mahesh Chandraguru, Shantha Raju, Purushotham, and Mahadevamurthy. Announcing that they would be celebrating the Mahisha Dasara this year, they challenged Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha and MLA L Nagendra to stop the celebrations.

Addressing the media, the Dalit Welfare Trust president said, “We are not hurting anyone’s sentiments. We have been celebrating the Mahisha Dasara for the past six years. However, last year MP Pratap Simha stopped our celebrations and hurt the feelings of the native residents. MLA L Nagendra, who is unaware of the history of the place, questioned the validity of the Mahisha Dasara. We have a responsibility to teach them history. Let them have an open discussion if they can.”

Former mayor Purushotham said, “Earlier, there was a practice of celebrating only a few great leaders’ birthdays in the country. Now, all visionary leaders’ birthdays are been celebrated. We have never opposed that. Similarly, Mahisha is the king of the native people. We have learned about the history and are celebrating his feast. Those who like it can attend, those who don’t, can stay away. If someone tries to create trouble when we celebrate our culture, then we will not stay quiet,” he cautioned.
