Mysuru: Balavindran, one of the associates of dreaded sandalwood smuggler and bandit Veerappan died in KR hospital, during wee hours of Thursday, August 20.

He was 70-years-old and has been serving life sentence over the last 25 years.

Hailing from Malemadeshwara, Balavindran fell unconscious in the jail. Sources say that neurological disorders may have caused his death.

The four convicts – Gnanaprakash, Simon, Meesekar Madaiah and Bilavendran – had been on death row since 2004, when the Supreme Court sentenced them to death for killing 22 policemen and forest personnel from Tamil Nadu in a landmine blast at Palar, Karnataka.

The punishment was later reduced to life imprisonment.
